MULTIGENERATIONAL EFFECTS OF L-BMAA ON THE LIFE TABLE TRAITS OF CERIODAPHNIA DUBIA (CLADOCERA)
Secondary metabolites produced by CyanoHABs (Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms) in inland aquatic systems are often toxic to various members of the zooplankton community. However, there are still controversial and inconsistent reports regarding their effects, particularly for understudied metabolites such as the amino acid L-BMAA (L-β-N-methylamino-L-alanine). This study aimed to evaluate the multigenerational effects of L-BMAA on the survival and fecundity of Ceriodaphnia dubia, exposed to three concentrations (12.5, 25, and 50% of the LC50) and a toxin-free control. Cladocerans were exposed for five consecutive generations. The results showed a progressive decline in all life-table variables (life expectancy, net reproductive rate, gross reproductive rate, generation time, and intrinsic rate of increase) across generations. At the 12.5% concentration, the toxic effects were moderate, and organisms partially compensated in the F1 generation; however, life expectancy was drastically reduced compared to the control. In contrast, higher concentrations markedly reduced survival, especially in later generations, suggesting accumulation and generational transfer of the toxin.
