Conferences provide the time and space for students and professionals to share scientific discoveries, nurture new ideas, engage in collaborations, undertake training, and look for employment opportunities. Conferences organized by international scientific societies like ASLO, however, offer even more than that; they house truly integrated global communities and can also foster involvement in science outreach and in policy/advocacy. In addition, society conferences offer a great opportunity to become familiar with the benefits available to members (or to reflect on whether you’d benefit from becoming a member) and to consider how you can volunteer and contribute to your society. ASLO fosters a diverse, international scientific community that creates, integrates and communicates knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic sciences, advances public awareness and education about aquatic resources and research, and promotes scientific stewardship of aquatic resources for the public interest. ASLO Officers and other Board members serve staggered terms, and new members are needed each year. Membership on the ASLO Board is one of the best and most rewarding ways you can serve the science community and ASLO. Join the current Board members at the ASLO booth (exhibit space) during morning and afternoon coffee breaks to ask your questions and to hear more about the society, it’s member benefits, and how you can volunteer with us!
